Photography Workshop...

I had such a fun afternoon today! My sweet friend Eileen put together a great photography workshop where we were able to learn from an extremely talented photographer, Steve Mackley. We had a blast asking lots of questions and learning from the pro. I learned a lot about lighting and several new tips & tricks. Thanks Eileen for putting this together!

a fun morning fabric shopping...

with my friend Jessica. Yesterday I took the morning off work and spent it ooohing and ah hing over all the gorgeous fabric at a new quilt boutique in Preston, ID. Here's the stash I came home with. I bought it as a reward to myself as soon as I finish up some projects that are in the works. I will be making some fun aprons in the next few weeks.

**eta: The cute quilt boutique is called Suppose. It is located on Main Street in Preston and it's on the West side of the road. It's adorable and definitely worth the trip!

Last fall we moved into a new home. On the side of our home is a forested area that hasn’t been touched for over 30 years. This spring we have been working hard as a family to get it cleaned up and ready for imaginative play. I snapped a few photos of my husband and kids working hard and knew the Fern papers would be the perfect collection to scrapbook this milestone. I created the tree accents by mounting the circle stickers from the Life’s A Hoot Cardstock stickers onto green patterned paper (Candy Green from the Whoopsy Daisy collection). I then handcut brown cardstock tree trunks. The owl accents are cut from the Owl Hoot A paper. Easy! I also really love how the Hoot Patchwork paper adds a layered look to my background with one easy step. This would be a really fun collection to use for camping photos, too!

When looking at a collection of scrapbook supplies, don’t limit yourself to it’s intended theme. For example, I used the Dance Collection on this layout of my daughter’s first day of school. The base of my layout is the adorable Aged Line Black paper from the Nancy Jane Collection. And then my photos are mounted on the Pink Brocade paper from the Dance Collection. I used the Dance Cardstock stickers for accents. I love that the words and designs on the cardstock stickers are versatile enough to use on a page about something other than dancing! What a great way to stretch your scrapbooking dollars!

I absolutely adore the colors of the Nancy Jane Collection . . . and with three daughters, I can see myself using this collection again and again. With the blue, black, and orange it also would be a great collection to use for my son! For this page of my youngest daughter, I cut out the flower cluster from the Lazy Daisy paper to use as my main accent. I popped it up with foam squares and added yellow jewels to the flower centers for added dimension. To help the title stand out against the Tweet Birdie Swirls paper, I doodled "messy" black outlines around each letter with a pen. I really love the fun and playful feeling this page has . . . just like my daughter’s personality!

I was so happy when I was able to secretly snap this cute picture of my husband hanging out with my daughter in our backyard. He had just picked her up from Kindergarten and decided they needed a little one-on-one time. So he took her in the backyard to eat ice cream bars and chat. He’s such a great dad! I love the colors of the Rae collection and knew it would be perfect for scrapping this photo. The brown is masculine, while the yellow is feminine and soft; perfect for a daddy-daughter memory! I kept the design of this layout fairly simple so that the photo would be the star of the show. The visual triangle of elements around the photo also helps to communicate that the photo is what’s important on this page. A few dabs of yellow Stickles to a few of the flower centers adds just enough detail and interest.

I just loved the new Cowgirl Collection when I first saw it!!! So much so that even though I don’t own a horse, or live by anyone with horses, I found a friend who did and begged her to email me some pictures! (Thanks, Tawnya!) This is Tawnya’s daughter, Lexi, giving her horse a sweet little kiss! I cut the star out of the Cowgirl Star paper to use it as an accent on my page. For a bit of sparkle, I used a glue pen to carefully color in the horse on the star. Next I sprinkled it with pink glitter and attached it to my page with foam squares. Glitter is such an easy way to add impact to a page without a lot of effort!
